For nearly a decade, I believed the best way to help people lower their electric bills was to help them produce more energy.
So I talked about solar. Panels. Batteries. Net metering. Technology. All the things that usually come to mind when someone says they want to lower their energy costs.
And to be clear, those solutions absolutely have their place.
But over time, I realized something important.
It Hit Me One Day
Imagine trying to fill a bucket that is full of holes.
You could pour more water into it.
Or you could patch the holes first.
For years, I was helping people pour more energy into homes and businesses that were quietly wasting it every single day.
That is not optimization.
That is compensation.
The Most Expensive Energy Is the Energy You Never Used Well
If your heating and cooling system runs longer than it should, that costs money.
If your equipment wastes electricity because of poor power quality, that costs money.
If your insulation allows conditioned air to escape, that costs money.
If your water system is wasting water, pressure, and the energy required to heat it, that costs money too.
Every dollar invested in producing more energy becomes less effective when the building itself is still leaking value.
It is like buying a larger gas tank because your car has a fuel leak.
Today, I Start by Finding the Waste
This changed everything about how I approach helping homeowners, renters, businesses, property owners, and organizations.
I no longer begin with, “Do you want solar?”
I begin by looking for what is already being lost.
The Better Questions
- Where is your home or business losing energy?
- What equipment is quietly costing you money every month?
- Are you paying for electricity you are not using efficiently?
- Could your water usage be lower?
- Is your building working harder than it needs to?
Sometimes the answer is solar.
Sometimes it is not.
Sometimes the biggest opportunity costs far less than people expected.
This Is Not Just About Electricity
The more I worked with people and businesses, the more I noticed a pattern.
Waste is not limited to energy.
Money leaks through inefficient systems, hidden fees, water usage, fuel consumption, poor purchasing decisions, equipment downtime, merchant processing, insurance, taxes, and missed opportunities.
Once you begin looking for waste instead of looking for a product to sell, your entire perspective changes.
My Role Has Changed Too
People often ask me what I do.
Years ago, I probably would have answered, “I help people go solar.”
Today, my answer is broader and more accurate.
I am an independent connector, advisor, and resource. I help people identify hidden opportunities to reduce unnecessary costs, improve efficiency, and make better long-term decisions.
Sometimes that leads to solar.
Sometimes it leads somewhere completely different.
Either way, the process starts in the same place.
A Lesson Beyond Business
This lesson goes beyond electric bills.
In life, we often focus on adding more. More income. More work. More technology. More effort. More noise.
But sometimes growth does not begin by adding something new.
Sometimes it begins by removing what no longer serves us.
The habits that waste our time. The thoughts that waste our energy. The relationships that drain us. The systems that quietly hold us back.
The principle is the same.
I Was Wrong
And honestly, I am grateful I was.
Changing my mind made me better at helping others.
If there is one lesson I hope people take from my first ten years in this industry, it is this:
The goal is not always to produce more.
The goal is to waste less.
Everything else becomes more valuable after that.
