Important Update: Baltimore Electric Bills Could Increase Significantly in 2025 – What You Need to Know

As Baltimore residents, we all strive to manage our household expenses effectively, but there’s some important news that could impact your budget starting in 2025. Recent reports indicate that the average electric bill for Baltimore-area residents could increase by approximately $276 per year beginning in June 2025. This increase is driven by a combination of higher electricity supply costs, increased demand, and a decrease in the availability of power plants.

What’s Behind the Potential Increase?

The Maryland Office of People's Counsel (OPC), an independent state agency that advocates for residential customers, has been actively challenging these hikes. However, it seems that the increase may be unavoidable. For customers of Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), this could translate to an additional $18 per month on their electric bills. It's crucial to note that these extra charges won’t be going to BGE directly but will be paid to the power plants that generate the electricity.

The rising demand for electricity, coupled with the retirement of older plants like the Brandon Shores and Herbert Wagner coal plants, has put significant pressure on our grid. PJM, the organization responsible for managing our electricity supply, has been criticized for not planning proactively for these changes. As a result, the region is facing a tighter electricity supply, leading to higher costs.

Efforts to Mitigate the Impact

There are ongoing efforts to bring new clean energy projects online, which could help ease some of these cost increases. However, these projects take time, and the current situation underscores the importance of exploring alternative energy solutions.
